A Florida man has been accused of taking baby swans from Lake Orlando.
ORLANDO, FLORIDA — A Florida man was accused of stealing baby swans from their nest Sunday.
According to Orange County online court records, 71-year-old Richard Newell Harger Sr. He was charged with third-degree theft for stealing baby swans and was arrested on Monday.
According to the arrest report, people around the lake filmed Harger playing the swans and alerted the police.
According to the video footage, Harger looked like he was wearing a red shirt, and as such, he resembled the volunteers in downtown Orlando. Harger approached the swans’ nest and placed the chicks in a red cooler. Harger was also blocking the adult swans while putting the fry in the cooler. Harger’s video was uploaded to Instagram.

When witnesses around Lake Eola protested, Harger said he was a rescue team and that if they didn’t pick up the cubs, they would die.
According to police records, Harger said he took the swans to avoid harm and later apologized.
According to the Orlando Police Department’s statement, “We thank the Orlando Police Department and the responsive public for helping to identify the person who took the swans. We are happy that the swans, the symbol of Lake Eola Park, have returned safely. Our teams will take care of the health of the swans.”
