A Florida man has been jailed for sending a threatening letter to the courthouse.
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – A man who sent a threatening letter to the courthouse received a three-year federal prison sentence, according to federal officials.
According to the records, 47-year-old Freddy Velazquez sent the letter containing the powdered substance from the Monticello state prison in Florida in February 2019. Velazquez was serving time in prison for a crime he had committed before.
The letter said it contained “lethal chemicals”, according to a statement Friday by the US attorney’s office in Miami. The letter also said, “I want you all to die. I hate you all. I will fight until you die.”
After a person working in the courthouse opened the letter, the courthouse was evacuated due to security measures and the streets around it were closed for 8 hours. Four federal officers and Miami police hazmat units have considered the possibility of a biological attack.
After the examination on the substance, it turned out that the substance was a detergent.
Velazquez was accused of sending a threatening message.
