Florida Man Birthday November 9
Florida man arrested for defrauding the state of California of more than $10 million
The incident took place in Sacramento County. A Florida man admitted to defrauding the state of California for more than $10 million. Federal prosecutors, who made a statement as part of the investigation conducted by the federal court, announced that the Florida man pleaded guilty to tobacco tax fraud.
Akrum Alrahib, 43, lives in Miami and previously lived in California. While living in California, Alrahib confessed to conspiring to commit
mail fraud. He could be sentenced to a maximum of 5 years in prison for his crime and would also have to pay a $250,000 fine to the state.
Prosecutors announced that between 2016 and 2017, Alrahib sold tobacco products to various individuals and companies despite knowing it was illegal. Tobacco products sold included non-taxed tobacco products such as chewing tobacco, leaf tobacco, and cigars.
Alrahib admitted to all the accusations against him. He was fined for having deprived the government of tax due by selling untaxed produce. In about 2 years, the wholesale cost of tobacco products rose from 27.5% to 65%.
California law requires licensed tobacco distributors to collect and report excise tax. Nick Maduros, director of the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, said tax evasion is a crime that cannot be ignored. Maduros argued that tax evasion is not a fair situation for taxpaying companies.
